Can You Play the KINGDOM HEARTS Steam Versions in Ultrawide and When Are Mods Coming?

KINGDOM HEARTS may have been part of PC for a while (finding a home in the Epic Games Store over the last three years), but now that it has arrived to Steam, many are finally jumping on the bandwagon. Whether you're a newcomer or a veteran seeking for a nostalgia hit, this title is finally part of the PC sphere in a platform that many swore their loyalty to... but given the fact that it's been out for three years, what about the mods?

Over on the Epic Games store, there is already a dedicated modding fanbase. There are 127 mods available for the first title, Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, 199 mods for the second one, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and many more, but not all of them are available for you to take advantage of over on Steam... but that doesn't mean that all of them are unavailable.

A group of individuals have already devoted their time to decoding and reverse engineering public-sourced mods to find a way to get them on Steam. Though it requires a bit of tinkering and changing the way the mods usually worked over on the Epic Games store, it means that a few things are already ready for players to embark on.

Notably, these valiant efforts began in the Steam Discussion forums for the first bundle, KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-. Desperate users hoping for updated quality-of-life features, graphics, and even super ultrawide support have been banding together to find the best solutions. After getting the Dynamic Ultrawide mod to work, a user also managed to find the relevant Hex code for the first game to get it working on both 21:9 and 32:9 resolutions.

Removing these black bars does come with a few caveats, however. First, you'll find your title to be a bit more crash-happy (more than usual, anyway), as some things will straight-up crash the title and could lose you a few minutes (or hours if you're not careful enough!). Second is that things tend to pop in and out of existence, which can be very immersion breaking at the least and downright distracting at the worst (especially in Agrabah).

Still, the game has been out for just three days at this point, and the community is already reverse-engineering some of the mods. The unfortunate thing is that some of the original modders have already left the community years ago from the original release, but that doesn't mean that all hope is lost, and it's looking very hopeful to experience the game with some of the best mods that people loved the most!

If you want to start your journey across KINGDOM HEARTS, then you can already do so via Steam!
