The Long Dark Celebrates Canada Day with 'Winter's Embrace' Event

Hinterland Studio's open world survival sim, The Long Dark, has launched its month-long Winter's Embrace event. In addition to new items and display modes, from 29th June - 31st July, in-game achievements (known as badges) are available to earn and the iconic cold temperatures of the game's Canadian setting will be even deadlier than before.

The first badge, Canadian Feast, can be earned by consuming 25 bags of ketchup chips and a further 25 bottles of maple syrup. If it wasn't obvious, these are the two new, Canada-centric food items. The other badge, Winter in July, will be awarded to players surviving 25 consecutive days in the colder temperatures of this Winter's Embrace event.

On that note, temperatures will be lower by 10 degrees Celsius both inside and outside during the month-long event. Canada's a cold place, and—ironically—The Long Dark players will feel it in these hot summer months.

Finally, two new display modes will be added to the game: Heritage Filter mode, inspired by the grainy "National Film Board TV and film content" the development team grew up with in the 70s and 80s, and Noir mode, which adds a monochrome tint to the game.

Oh, and a slew of tweaks and bug-fixes come packed into this update too. For a full list of changes, check out Hinterland Studio's latest changelog.

The badges and lower temperatures are exclusive to the month-long event, but the new items and display filters are now permanent additions to the game.

The Winter's Embrace event for The Long Dark will run from 29th June - 31st July on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
