Gearbox Software Are Not Working On Borderlands 3 But Lots More

As we reported back in September 2013, Gearbox Software are now working on two new IP's, which have nothing to do with the much-loved Borderlands series.

CEO Randy Pitchford told Polygon.com that they have ideas of what Borderlands 3 could be, but they are not working on it, or even pretending to work on it, taking a shot at Valve in the process.

I'm not going to [mess] around with you like Valve does with Half-Life 3. Look. We know we want it and we know it should exist, but we don't know what it is yet. But we are doing things in Borderlands that we'll announce soon, that are good, and that I think people will be really excited about if you love the franchise.

However, they are not sitting idly, twiddling their joysticks.  As well as the still unannounced new IPs, Gearbox have been working their socks off with remakes and sequels.

  • A new Brothers In Arms game. Still too early to announce anything.
  • Furious Four, announced as a Brothers In Arms sequel, but now has apparently evolved into something else.
  • Homeworld HD, Homeworld 2 HD and an entirely new Homeworld game named Homeworld: Shipbreakers.  The first two will have completely remastered audio and graphics, apparently making them worthy of even a 4K monitor.  The new title started life as a spiritual sequel to Homeworld, created by a studio made up of some of the original game's team - Blackbird Interactive.  Gearbox saw what they were doing and decided to let them use the name as well as publish it on PC for them.
  • And finally, the two unknown IPs.

Depending on when each of these is being released, Gearbox Software has a busy year ahead.

However, fans of Borderlands should still be pleased.  They are also working with Teltale Games to create Tales of the Borderlands - an adventure game set in canon in the Borderlands series.

Telltale is creating their game and the story, We talk a bit about what things could be done. They get really engaged in the brand. They throw some things at us and we tinker a little bit.
